Listening to Ray Charles this morning, some Greatest Hits compilation. His version of “America the Beautiful.” There’s this part right before the amber waves of grain verse where Ray does a groovy little rap, says, “…and you know when I was in school we used to sing it something like this…”
And then proceeds to do the Ray Thing.
This morning – as with every time I hear that line – I grinned, because, Gosh, Ray, I do remember singing “America the Beautiful” when I was in school, and I remember our beloved Mrs. Carlson plunking away on the upright, and we sang with all our hearts, and it was sweet and all, but, hoooo…we didn’t sing it nothing like that!
