Chickens. Not So Smart.

Yesterday we moved the chicken coop.  Maybe twenty yards.  At dusk I went to close the coop door and found the chickens huddled in a mass on the brown rectangle of ground where the coop had been standing.  Apparently that big wooden structure twenty yards away just didn’t ring a bell.  I was able to chick-chick-chiiick them into a line and get them marching to the new location, but after five of the hens made it inside, the dang rooster decided to take charge and he hustled everybody back to the brown patch of dirt.  There commenced a chicken roundup rodeo that finally ended in the moonlight as I tucked the last clucking bird inside and settled in for my final night at home before book tour.
