Good Singer Gone
Dan Seals died recently. Too young. His England Dan and John Ford Coley music always reminds me of summer and the first pangs of puppy love. His solo work took him to country stardom, and many folks knew him best for the song, “Bop.” But hands down my favorite Dan Seals song is “Rage On.” I listened to this song over and over when writing Population 485 because it speaks so powerfully to the less picturesque side of small town life, but even more than that I am left breathless by the way this song captures the sometimes wrongheaded but absolutely resolute ways in which we choose to stake out and defend our dignity. This song is a punch to the gut with a velvet fist.
