A Good Editor

The best editors critique frankly and directly. As in the following note, attached yesterday to the first draft of a piece I’m working on with a longtime trusted editor of mine: WHAT FOLLOWS IS GOOD, BUT IT DOESN’T SATISFY COVERING JUST THREE AREAS OF A MAN’S LIFE. I THINK WE SHOULD TRIM DOWN “FASHION,” “SEX,” AND “DEATH” AND THEN ADD SOME NEW AREAS.

This advice may apply even beyond the essay.
