Rear View Mirror

Just came across these photos sent to me months ago.  They were taken at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, Washington, during the Coop hardcover tour.  Photos like this always remind me how beautifully strange this life can be…a couple of hours in a bookstore, laughing and sharing stories with readers, then it’s back on the horse and on to the next spot, and suddenly a year has passed.  But when I revisit these photos and see the smiles and heartwarming connections (note two women, one wearing a UW-Eau Claire shirt and another a Point Beer shirt) (specific Cheesehead signals) it only reinforces my feeling that the fleeting nature of the moment makes it all the more precious.  This is why I always offer the blanket thank-you to anyone who makes the effort to attend any of my/our events.

A special thanks to the family posed in the last photo with me.  They are members of the faith in which I was raised and wrote about in Coop.  I cherished our conversation and their willingness to attend.

Canada Fishing Trip

Got a cranky little message from my computer saying my email mailbox was too full.  So I’m trimming things out.  Coming across some misplaced memories.  These photos were taken in Canada on a fishing trip I took with my friend and former ambulance partner Bill and his father Don, who very graciously shared their boats and cabin.  Don just couldn’t get over my obsession with catching Northerns.

What a fun trip.  Time stamp says 2003.  Man, time goes screamin’ past.

Still Life in Motel Room

Had some voice trouble last year.  Good news was, I knew a great speech therapist.  Not only did he help me out, we had fun doing it.  Among other things, if you see me driving down the road saying “mmmmmMMMMMMMMWHAHOWAREYOU?” over and over, it’s fine, I’m just workin’ out.  Drive on.

He has also decreed – especially when I’m on the road – that I do morning and evening sessions with a steam inhaler (clearly I am working my way up to diva).  Today as I was leaving the hotel room I saw the steamer sitting there and wondered what someone might think if they came in and didn’t know the backstory.

Just a steamer

So.  To the kind person who delivered clean towels in my absence, no, that’s not an electrified water bong.

Although I know at least three dudes who could totally do the conversion.

Thank You, Captain Tim

We are working on a new Long Beds album. I’ll explain more when the album is finished (it’ll be a few months).  For one of the songs, we needed about 7 seconds of the sound of an airplane.  Available online in roughly .32 seconds.

But why go online when you can record the real thing?  Here’s Jaime at work:

Jaime and the N3N

That’s a World War II vintage N3N.  An open-air two-seater.  Piloted from the rear cockpit by Captain Tim.  This is the airplane that appeared in Coop.

When the “work” was done, we all got to take a ride.

It was a pretty fun day.  “Pretty fun” is Midwestern Scandinavian for “YEEEEEHAAAAWWW!!!!”

Here’s some video: (more…)

Phuzzy Phone Pics

From an all-day session at the studio with the Long Beds (actually Molly came in a day later):

After that last shot, when Chuck had cased up his secret weapon, he and I retired to the kitchen for homemade lentil/cabbage/pork sausage soup…thank you to my wife for that, for fresh apple cake, and as always, for forbearance.  She is the solid center of my mental contraptions.
