Here’s another album of photos from the recent Mabel Tainter show. Two of my favorites:
Billy crushes me with his guitar.
Big finish with “After Waymore’s Blues.”

Volume One has put up an album of photos from the Long Beds show at the gorgeous Mabel Tainter.
A collection of Long Beds photos from the old site.
While we were finishing up the Tiny Pilot album, Chris (our guitarist) holed up in his basement to record some additional guitar sounds. Note the glamorous setting in critical proximity to laundry (a recurring motif of my albums).
Amble Down Records has just announced that the new album by Michael Perry and the Long Beds is available for pre-order.
Order now and listen within 24 hours: If you place your pre-order now, within 24 hours the record company will send you a code so you can download and listen to the entire album immediately. Then on March 1(15 days prior to the official release) they’ll mail you the physical album (featuring 3 bonus tracks, dedications, humorous credits, and a full-color poster-sized insert including lyrics and song notes on one side and a captioned photo album on the other).
Photographer Mike O’Brien shot the QuinnElizabeth/Long Beds concert the other night. You can see the rest of the photos (at much higher resolution) here.
We are working on a new Long Beds album. I’ll explain more when the album is finished (it’ll be a few months). For one of the songs, we needed about 7 seconds of the sound of an airplane. Available online in roughly .32 seconds.
But why go online when you can record the real thing? Here’s Jaime at work:
That’s a World War II vintage N3N. An open-air two-seater. Piloted from the rear cockpit by Captain Tim. This is the airplane that appeared in Coop.
When the “work” was done, we all got to take a ride.
It was a pretty fun day. “Pretty fun” is Midwestern Scandinavian for “YEEEEEHAAAAWWW!!!!”
Here’s some video: (more…)
From an all-day session at the studio with the Long Beds (actually Molly came in a day later):
After that last shot, when Chuck had cased up his secret weapon, he and I retired to the kitchen for homemade lentil/cabbage/pork sausage soup…thank you to my wife for that, for fresh apple cake, and as always, for forbearance. She is the solid center of my mental contraptions.
A portion of the studio where we’ve been recording is built over an old swimming pool. Engineer Jaime discovered that if he suspended a microphone in the vast space below the floor, it picked up some fine reverberant goodies. Recording engineers love this sort of stuff (geek alert!).
