Losing Satellites

To the person who handed me the note about “Losing Satellites” after my recent speaking event, I don’t know what to say other than peace, strength, and thanks. Sometimes I try to be serious, sometimes I try to be funny, sometimes I just write out on a limb. Never any idea how it might be received, humbled because I know I can’t always live up to my own work. Thank you for listening, and thank you for the kind words.

Losing Satellites

Audio MP3

When the last star is gone
It’s darkest before the dawn
And I’m calling
Baby hold on.

I dreamed of a satellite
One that was set right
To relay
All your little heartbeats.

From out in the Pleiades
Down to my bended knee
Little one
I’m so all alone

chorus
And in the cold light of day
As the fog burns away
You fade

You hung a dress on the line
Just before the last time
When the wind blows
I see you slow dance

Why is it the worst of me
Seems to get the best of me
Everytime
I put out my hand

chorus

Little bits of history
Little bits of you and me
Burning
Fire in the sky
the last light of day
Fade

Confluences

Two bands, driving in opposite directions across the same American interstate, manage to pull off a digital meet-up in the middle of nowhere and post a picture:

Megafaun Elk Mountain Meetup

Except that’s not the middle of nowhere. That’s Elk Mountain. I rode roundup and ran fence lines and cut miles and miles of hay at the foot of that mountain for five years when I worked on the Double 8 Ranch. Climbed to the top a time or two. And I can tell from the Conoco sign that they are one exit down from Carbon County Road 402, which is mentioned in the first verse of “Could Be You,” off the album Headwinded, upon which one of the fellows in the bands doing the meet-up (Phil Cook of Megafaun; they were meeting War on Drugs) played harmonica.

It is what it is. And what it is, is groovy.

I miss that mountain. Going to visit it (and the dear friends at the foot of it) this summer.

Long Beds in Minnesota Friday

c. Mike O'Brien Photo

Gonna be in Morris, Minnesota, Friday night, telling stories and making music with the Long Beds.

We’ll have special guest Andy Dee with us. He will scorch up his lap steel.

Was looking back at the galleries below, and man, we do have some fun. The writing comes first, but so glad I finally learned that D chord. Feels good to chonk along.

Playing outside at Phoenix Park.

Hot and sweaty at the Mousetrap.

At the State Theater.

Recent Performance Photos

Photographer Dick Ainsworth took some photos of my recent shows in Mineral Point (with the band) and in Stoughton (solo monologue).

New Mary Cutrufello Music

I always loved listening to Waylon Jennings sing “It’s Not Supposed to Be That Way,” then I became a Dad of daughters and now when that song ain’t makin’ me weep it’s scarin’ me half to death. So glad to hear Mary Cutrufello included it on her latest project, which you can obtain here.

I’m also deeply taken with one on there Mary wrote herself: “On A Sunday in March, 55082″ captures so perfectly the mix of hope and ennui we feel in the slushy month that might – or might not – be spring. Plus, bonus points for using the term ‘Sconnie and making it sound pretty.

Some of you will know that now and then Mary is a Long Bed. One of the pleasures of having a band is I get to ask folks I’ve admired for a long, long time to step onstage. Mary is one of those.

Shows in Next Two Days

Sure is cool to look forward to work: In two hours I’m heading across the county for rehearsal with the Long Beds. I never get tired of hanging out with musicians, especially when they’re also friends (and for these two shows we welcome special guest and long-time pal Andy Dee). And I’m especially ready for a little singing after this last marathon writing stretch.

Then tomorrow a show in Northfield, Minnesota. Day after that, a show in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Been practicin’ and everything and going to do at least one new song.

Long Beds on International Stage – Photo Gallery

More photos from the show in Ashippun (daylight photos of the stage here). I like the last shot in the gallery, the one that shows the combine behind us.

The Long Beds and I will be playing in Reedsburg tomorrow.

Megafaun Megafriends

UPDATE: THE NEW MEGAFAUN ALBUM IS NOW OUT (AND AVAILABLE RIGHT HERE).

Brothers Phil and Brad Cook used to come to our farm and hang their runny little noses over the sheep fence to see our lambs every spring. Later in life Phil was a Long Bed for a while (he and that Justin feller played with me at my wedding during the talent show portion) (yes, my wedding had a talent show portion) (actually Phil was a pre-Long Bed) and you can hear his banjo and harmonica on Headwinded. Also this month he became a Dad!

All this to give context to how pleased I am to see the Cook brothers and their friend Joe get the attention they’ve earned … in Rolling Stone, no less.

P.S. Phil is the one missing a beard. Brad is the tall dude. Joe is…well, seriously, I’ve given you enough clues.

More Phark Photos

Thank you to my cousin MJ, who shot these and sent them along. I like the one titled “Goofy Tooth.”
