I met Connie at a bookseller’s show and she told me she had done this interview a while back.
Talking about music, England, poetry, not drinking in bars, and why it takes him forever to write a book.
Word of Mouth interview.
Mike did an interview with Book Club Girl Radio, and while the main purpose was to promote the paperback version of Coop, he also discussed what his wife thinks (or doesn’t think) of his writing, took a few questions from Utah, used the word “vicissitude” for the second time in two days, explained “Tiny Pilot,” discussed tuba-playing in the country, verified that logging is tougher than writing, and admitted that there are a couple of chickens he never will be able to butcher.
Another interview for the Coop paperback tour, although we got delightfully off-track and managed to discuss Truck and Population 485 and the music as well. I like this blog radio business. I can yap all around the country while staring at my actual (as opposed to virtual) chickens.
It seems three lifetimes ago and in many ways it was, but once upon a time George House and I recorded some novelty songs in his basement. I supplied the lyrics and ?lead? vocals, George supplied the band, backing vocals, and all sound effects. Gotta say, this had all been long gone from my memory when I showed up to spend an hour live on air with George a month or so ago. When he played some of those old tunes, I was flabbergasted. He put them on a CD for me, so I figure over the next while I’ll leak a few out there.
Today I’m on the road, away from my home state, so I thought this would be a good place to start:
“Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cheeseheads”
Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cheeseheads
Thanks, George!
When producer Todd Witter came up and spent a morning with me and our chickens, I had no idea what he’d do with the sound…he didn’t really interview me so much as let me ramble. When the following piece aired on Morning Edition as a “Wisconsin Life” essay, it was fun to re-imagine the morning (it was muddy and soggy as I recall). But my favorite part of the audio requires a closer listen, and is never explained: All this talk of chickens, and yet…you can hear interlopers…
I’m taking a week to just hang out with my family. We’re not going anywhere exotic, in fact most days we’re just knockin’ around the farm. But posts for this week may or may not reflect reality or current events, as I’ve set them up to publish themselves so I can be off splitting firewood or toasting marshmallows or re-inventing myself as the Chicken Whisperer.
During the recent World Tour in support of Tiny Pilot, the Long Beds climbed off their palatial tour buses (we each have our own bus, naturally – it minimizes all the vicious infighting) to appear with Michael Feldman on Whad’Ya Know? The show is archived now. You can listen here.
We play at the end of the first hour and the beginning of the second.
As we left the stage, there in the wings was my dear friend Frank. Turns out he was the next guest. I’ve written about Frank in my books…also if you’ve heard me tell the “billions” story, he’s that Frank. One of the kindest, smartest fellows I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Once his interview gets rolling and he starts talking about Wisconsin milk production, you’ll get a sense of his facility with knowledge. I especially like his cheese comment.
Mitch Teich talks to me about albums, airplanes, and accordions. OK, nothing about accordions…this time.
