Clodhopping Today

Going to be at the Local Store in downtown Eau Claire signing copies of The Clodhopper Monologues from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. CST today…c’mon on down. If you haven’t been in the Local Store, it’s wall-to-wall with good things created by people in the Chippewa Valley (yup, that stretches out to Fall Creek and up to Nobbern!).

And tonight…tonight we go visit Mabel. Tainter, that is. It’s the official Clodhopper Monologues CD release show (call 715-235-0001 for ticket info). I’ll do some material from the new double-CD, I’ll do some material not on the CD, and I’ll read a little something here and there, even a snippet from the new book. It’ll be sort of a show, but also kind of a get-together.

And…thank you!

Thank You And Leaves

Thank you all who helped make Stillwater a welcoming evening. Next stop Menomonie on Friday for the Clodhopper Monologues CD release show (oh, but first a stop in Eau Claire) (umm, the folks at V1 have been very good to me, but I will not sign EVERY anything – I’ll sign almost anything, but…) (at a country music event I once saw a sign at the end of the autograph line that said, THE ARTIST WILL SIGN FLAT OBJECTS ONLY).

Meanwhile, holed up and writing. Outside chokecherry leaves have begun to yellow and fall…

Encore Tent Show Radio Tonight – Tommy Sands & Different Drums of Ireland

If you’re within range of one of these stations tonight (Saturday, September 17th) we hope you’ll join Mike as he hosts another edition of Tent Show Radio from Big Top Chautauqua.  Information on streaming the show here.

The musical guests will be Tommy Sands & Different Drums of Ireland, and in this episode’s monologue – delivered from the backstage dressing room with the one lonely little lightbulb burnin’ – Mike discusses the glories and tribulations of rain. After all, the show is in a tent…

You can join the Tent Show Radio Facebook page here.

Sometimes Lights and Sirens Are Peaceful

First responder training last night. Which leads me to say: So lucky and grateful to do what I do. Deep in a book and up against a deadline, trying to get this out (and a big thank you to Alissa and Blakeley, who keep the paddleboat on course), my family putting up with the grump who disappears into the little room over the garage…but man, I’m grateful for this writing life.

That said, I’m also never happier than when I’m hanging out with people from all walks of life – tow-truck operators, nurses, mechanics, truck drivers, electricians, farmers, retirees, office workers, pretty much whatever y’got – who are gathered to speak the language of Fire and EMS. At training last night we practiced inserting Combitubes and King airways, worked with the defribrillators, rehearsed epi pen protocols, and worked some spinal cord stabilization scenarios that included a close examination of the underside of a fire truck. In between, of course, there were the smoke-n-joke (without the smoking, not allowed) sessions, the wisecracks, the friendly needling…all part of the reason that I’ve stuck with some element of Fire and/or EMS for the past 23 years even as the rest of my life has gotten progressively busier. I stick with it because it’s “boots on the ground” in every sense.  Emergency calls – even just a handful per year – keep me tethered directly to reality and provide a perpetual sense of scale. When it’s time to hang it up, I’ll hang it up. But for now that pager is either A) on my hip, B) under my pillow, or C) in the console of the car waiting to be switched on as soon as I return to within range of the county line.

So – from those earliest calls through the “Nobbern” days and right up to the present – a big thank you to my EMS/Fire brothers and sisters for allowing me to play in the sandbox.

Sneak Listen to Clodhopper Monologues

Our friends and neighbors over at Volume One are running an interview with me that includes an audio sample from the soon-to-be-released The Clodhopper Monologues. I don’t recall exactly which bit I’m doing in the live-performance excerpt, but I believe it’s one (or two) of those stories where afterwards I have to compose letters of apology to my family.

On September 23, I’ll be at the Volume One Local Store to sign copies of The Clodhopper Monologues before driving over to the beautiful Mabel Tainter Theatre in Menomonie for the the live CD-release show.

If you’re geographically removed, pre-orders for the new double-CD set are being taken here.
