I’d Say This is About Right

Especially the take on “Beth/Rest.” Sometimes a beautiful song is just a beautiful song.* Get too wound up in postmodern ironically-detached hipster deconstruction coolism and pretty soon yer chewin’ yer own tail.

*Our four-year-old favors “Michicant” because that’s the one with the bicycle-bell (Chinese bells, I’m told, but around here, it’s a bicycle bell).

Thank You Big Top

The big tent is up for the 25th year straight, and last night there was a soiree. I was allowed onstage in my boots to speak a word or two (among other things, I read an excerpt from Truck describing my first-ever visit to the Big Top to see a Greg Brown show in company of the woman who would eventually consent to be my wife). The tent looked great (so, so much work goes on behind the scenes to prepare everything) and we were treated to wonderful food, conversation, and music. Thanks to everyone involved, and a special thanks to those who give that bit of extra that keeps the whole canvas deal up and running. There were a lot of you there last night.

Gonna be up there in the tent several times this summer. Looking forward to it.

The musical guestes will be Rich Little and Three Redneck Tenors, and in this episode’s monologue – delivered from the backstage dressing room with the one lonely little lightbulb burnin’ – Mike discusses that time in Memphis he got on the wrong elevator and the papparazzi  mistook him for a duck.

Photos From Phoenix Park Show

First: All thanks and all credit and copyright and whatever relevant else to Mike O’Brien, who has posted an album of photos from the Phoenix Park show with the Long Beds and Mary Cutrufello. If you note the presence of youngsters, you’ll understand why the Sounds Like Summer concert series has become a favorite of ours.

By the way, if you ever run into Billy (with or without his banjo) ask him the story of how he got that Green Bay Packer cap (the story is also on the Tiny Pilot album between songs).

This is the first time I’ve ever had a child run into me with a bicycle during a song. I picked him up and dusted him off, Dad showed up, and after a few tears, I’m happy to report he was back in the saddle.

P.S., just found out Volume One posted these photos also in an easily-viewable format.
