Good Busy

So much going on right now…writing deadlines, planting, new chicks, getting ready for new pigs, fencing, garden things, fishing with daughters, magazine work, lots of behind-the-scenes stuff to get some projects underway, booking events for 2012, so grateful for my wife and her steadiness…and highlight of the week? After FIVE YEARS on this farm – and with the help of my two daughters – on Monday night I FINALLY got the brown pole barn cleaned out and have a place to park everything AND stack my fencing stuff and my secret stash of prize 55-gallon drums (procured by Mills, natch).

Back at it.

Electric Bill Captures the Essence of Spring

Electric bill for April shows the average temperature for that month last year was 46.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Average temperature this year, 38.2 degrees.

I thought so.

Good news is the sun came out just enough that the photovoltaics (I call’em solar panels) generated $57.91 worth of juice.

All the Young Dudes With Beards

For quite a few years now all the young dudes have gone back to beards. Everything’s a circle, of course, as the Ozark Mountain Daredevils remind us from 1974:

Fire/EMS Recruitment

Because of my background in Fire and EMS, I’m often asked to participate in related events. Unfortunately, time and travel rarely allow it. Brule Fire Department Chief Keith Kesler made a similar request of me recently, and although I can’t be there for the “Be Somebody” campaign, I thought I’d share some of their materials…perhaps they will be of use to departments elsewhere in the United States. We’re all doin’ the same thing, just with different accents.

After the page break, more details on this year’s event. (more…)

Tent Show Radio Tonight – Johnsmith, Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, & Cheryl Wheeler

If you’re within range of one of these stations tonight (Saturday, May 7th) we hope you’ll join Mike as he hosts another edition of Tent Show Radio from Big Top Chautauqua. Information on streaming the show here.

The musical guests will be Johnsmith, Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, & Cheryl Wheeler, and in this episode’s monologue – delivered from the backstage dressing room with the one lonely little lightbulb burnin’ – …Mike discusses giant oxen, bent shovel handles, and why the path to happiness is more than likely paved with dirt.

Because It Hasn’t Snowed for Two Days

I thought I’d celebrate by uploading some very snowy photos I just ran across from a story I did a while back for Backpacker magazine. They sent me out mushing for three days. It was a terrific trip. You can read the original article here.

These photos were taken by Layne Kennedy. His work can be viewed here. He worked hard on this trip. Had to pack boot-warmers around his cameras to keep them working.
