Right Down the Line

Coincidentally, during our recent road trip, one of the CDs I packed in the family van was a Gerry Rafferty compilation.  Wanted the tots to hear it.  I’ve done a lot of writing to his music, but above all it reminds me of summer days and youthful yearning.

Grass, Man

My schedule is such that I’ll be drifting in late, but I am told by some farmers I respect that this is going to be a mighty fine conference if you have an interesting in grazing.

More specifically, if your animals are interested in grazing.

Family Trip

Took a family trip over the Christmas break.  Stops in Winona, Minnesota; St. Louis, Missouri; and Nashville/Gallatin, Tennessee.  Spent time with dear relatives and dear friends.  All-in-all we proved to be fairly roadworthy.  The transmission on the van developed an ominous clunk, which then developed into the twice as ominous clunk-CLUNK, but we are safely returned and will leave it to Scott to make the proper assessment (this repair may exceed two dozen eggs).

Memorable moments: laughing with my wife, watching our eldest daughter help care for rescued horses and donkeys, and listening to the youngest sing “America the Beautiful” at a volume exceeding most farm equipment.

And a special thank you to Mills: we returned to a warm house, a big stack of firewood, flowers on the table, and pampered chickens.

Population 485 on the Tigris

Whenever my girls and I discuss my time on the road, we always turn the discussion to those in the military, gone for far more extended and exponentially riskier periods of time than a guy telling stories in regional arts centers.  So it’s always deeply humbling to receive a photo like the one below (especially right in the heart of the holidays).  Offered with a smile and respect for those serving everywhere, here is SSG Goings of the 1st Infantry Division (forgive me if I got the rank or division wrong, I’m interpreting from an email) on a bridge over the Tigris River.
