Snow-Tromping

The whole family put on snowshoes and walked ’round the candlelit trails of the Beaver Creek Reserve the other night.  Hauled the two-year-old in a sled, she kept saying we were “snow-shooting,” which sounds like fun to me.  It was a nice setup, short enough that I took the 9-year-old on a second loop while my wife and young Jane headed inside where Jane enjoyed looking at all the nature exhibits.  On the second loop, Amy and I talked about Uncle John, who is the real snowshoer of our family.  We agreed that his beard matches his snowshoes.

A special thanks to the staff and volunteers who ran the show.  All the ridiculous hoo-hah in the world and there we were enjoying a peaceful candlelit walk with our children and other nameless folks, everyone shuffling along in the dark.

My wife and I had a chuckle earlier in the week when we were discussing our plans.  “It’s finally warm enough that we could probably take the kids snow-shoeing,” she said, and then we both grinned as we considered how it is that we live in a place where you actually wait for it to warm up before taking the tykes snowshoeing.

The firewood pile dwindles…

More Good News

This morning at breakfast it was announced (by Herself) that although the two-year-old is a dragon she does not have fire in her nose.  Which should help with the house insurance.

Talking to Farmers

Just spent three days in a row speaking to groups of farmers.  Fun to make offhand rolling butterfat average references and see everyone just nod along…

Sunrise

Sun came up a boiling pink ball through the 20 degree haze, nice view of it while feeding chickens.  Daughter was watering cats in the granary, I met her on the path and we took a moment to soak it in.  Even the dang jet contrails looked acceptable, salmon-tinged as they were.  They formed the Roman numeral IVI, not sure of the significance, and the chickens seemed unconcerned.

Happy Long Beds News

Here at the Sneezing Cow compound, we’re grateful to announce that Mike has signed a deal with Amble Down Records for the release of his next album with the mighty Long Beds (that’s them below, from a photo shoot conducted less than 25 yards from the chicken coop).

Tiny Pilot will be released on March 16 (album cover art below).  Pre-orders will be taken February 1.

More information, photos, and a sample song available on the band’s page at Amble Down Records.

Over at MySpace, you can get an early listen to three songs.

I am deeply grateful to Kyle and the Amble Down crew for going out on a limb with us.  And I can’t say enough about the Long Beds themselves.  It is a joy and privilege to join them in song.

Here’s the album cover art:
