Jinx!

The computer is home.  Thank you for asking.  However, several of you have also asked how it’s working.  Seriously?  You’d want me to say it’s working just great?  Right out in public?  Because that is the butterfly that spawns the hurricane, my friends, and five minutes later I’d have the Blue Screen of Death.

So let’s just say, yes, it’s back, and I’m using it…

And thanks to Trygve as always.  Patient genius.

Red Power Pictures

Mike Schmudlach (International Harvester collector par excellence and the guy who knows where the Zagnuts are buried) sent me a batch of photos from the Red Power Roundup reading (and one from the parade).  Captions when you click on the pictures.

Long Beds on WOJB

I’m told that “Icarus” will be on the playlist for WOJB‘s “Folkways” show tonight.  Airs 7:30 p.m. CST until midnight.  Should be able to locate streaming signal here (click on “Listen” and pick your mode).  You’ll also hear some Greg Brown and Fred Eaglesmith.  Couldn’t hurt to call in and say howdy to the host.  Among other things, he knows pesto and pellet stoves, and what songs you just can’t play on the public airwaves.

International Picture

This was one of my favorite items at the recent Red Power Roundup.  Little firefighting outfit on a vintage International.

Football Music

Was listening to Mike Reid yesterday morning.  The album Turning for Home.  Interesting fellow.  Defensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals but played piano with symphonies during the offseason.  Retired in part due to hand injuries that he feared might imperil his piano playing.  Went on to write hit songs for country artists including Ronnie Milsap.  He had a number one hit in 1990 with the song “Walk on Faith.”   Turning for Home is one of my favorite singalong albums.

Beagle in the Beer Barn

Mike and Beagle 2009

Snuck up to Jamboree Days Sunday.  It was good to see folks.  My wife and I and our two little ones wandered around through the carnival, ate charcoal chicken and homemade hot dogs, sat on the sidewalk and caught candy during the parade, and watched some softball.  I got to see many of my Nobbern firefighting pals.  Always so good to visit.  The photo above is of me and my friend, neighbor and fellow firefighter Bob the One-Eyed Beagle.  Not only is Bob a good guy, he is a master at turning our pigs into neat little packages of smoky delight…

If you don’t know the story of how Bob got his nickname, it’s in here.

P.S. It used to be the beer tent, but now it’s the beer barn.  They’ve done quite a job of tuning up the park there in Nobbern.  I remember when I moved back in 1995, there was a falling down softball backstop and some old horseshoe pits.  Now it’s a going concern.  Tip of the cap to all the volunteers sung and unsung.

Hello, Computer?

Today the computer is supposed to come home from the hospital.  Mostly this was supposed to be preventative maintenance and upgrades, but one never really relaxes until it’s back home and making all the clicks and blinks it’s supposed to.

Jamboree Days

I’m hope-hoping that as you read this I’ll be headed for, or standing in, Nobbern for Jamboree Days.  Get some chicken, maybe pork chop on a stick, watch some softball, and of course wave at the yellow fire trucks in the parade.

Red Power Roundup Thank You

Computer still down so a longer post will have to wait (sneaking online with an old clunker that takes forever to load and tends to erase everything) but want to say thank you, thank you to Mike S., the IHCC, the Wisconsin State Historical Society archives crew, Guy Fay (didn’t get to see him but his work helped bring me there), and the many, many other people I met who share an addiction to Harvester Red.  We had a wonderful time and were grateful to be there (I brought some kin).  We filmed part of the day for Wisconsin Public Television, I’ll be sure to post air times when I have them…sounds like it might be September or so.
