Ready for Winter?

Last year we made it through a long, cold winter and had about four stovefuls of wood left over.  I hand-split the whole works.  But this year I got way behind.  So yesterday my Dad came with his hydraulic splitter and we made firewood all day long.  I’d say we’ve got enough stacked to get us to early February…so I’ll need to rustle up some more yet, but we’re in much better shape.  My only concern is if it will dry in time for fall.  We split it real thin and it’s stacked on a windy south-facing hillside, so that should help.  Right now it’s sunny and breezy now and I can smell the musky/cheesy scent of the split oak crossing the yard.

Dad has never been on the internet and won’t be anytime soon, but here’s a thanks to him.  He kept splitting late even after I showered and drove to town and joined my wife in the audience for a dance recital.  All those young children, dancing with heart and grace.  One particular 9-year-old and her friends performed a ballet to “Starry, Starry, Night” and left me with tears in my eyes.

Things I’ve Learned (at 44)

The reason that air compressor was on sale and cheaper than the rest is because none of the attachments were included.  Not the hose, not the chuck, not the coupler, not the gauge.  Not even the hose.  Pretty picture on the box, though.

Miles and Music

Last week while driving cross-country (well, from Lansing Michigan to northern Wisconsin by way of Chicago and some assorted zig-zags) I did a little music prospecting the old-fashioned way: by twisting the car radio (yes, I twisted, did not cheat with “SEEK”).  Among the songs that caught my ear:

My Poker Face, by Lady Gaga.  Last thing I’d have ever sought based on the artist and oeuvre, but dang, it gets in your head.  A tad naughty, of course.  But further evidence that confection is fun.  Quite an outfit she wears for cleaning the pool.

Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad, by Moby.  Downloaded it when I got home, listened to it on repeat while I wrote.  Never got the Moby thing, but I like this.

But then the real fun began…

Morning Glory

Shot this self-portrait on second-to-last morning of the recent book tour leg.  Note plastic plant, lame coffee, and general sag-eyed cragginess.  Fortunately the book business does not require nip and tuck.  At least not for me.

Despite the general droopiness you are looking at a photo of a guy who loves what he does.

Oh, and the sticker says just local food.  Some friends of ours back home.  You know you are dealing with Wisconsin when they have a beer tasting featuring a brew called “Floppin’ Crappie.”

Rain in the Morning

Slow, steady rain had the internet (satellite out here) down all morning so no big update, except to say we needed this rain in a bad way, grateful to have it.  Driving through southern Wisconsin a few days ago I saw water standing in the cornfields…but here everything was dust and hardpan.  So it’s fun to think of the roots stretching and unbending and drinking deep.

Home…and Welcome

Made it home safe last night.  Can hear the rooster crowing from here.  A heartfelt thank-you to everyone I met over the past 27 days.  A week home, then another tour leg to come.

For those of you new to the site, we did an introductory post yesterday – it’s right below or just click here.  I forgot to add that you can also keep up with the site by adding our RSS feed, located here.

It’s not just roosters these days.  Fresh from the post office: fuzzy chicks and fuzzy ducklings.
